My Top 10 ‘Nearly Couples’ in Video Games

[WARNING OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS]

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day earlier this week, I’ve decided to write a list of 10 of my favourite ‘nearly couples’ in video games. But what dos ‘nearly couples’ mean? Well, it means that both characters express an interest in eachother, but neither they nor the game ever states that they are a ‘true couple’ – so official and married couples will not be on this list (sorry Nathan and Elena). But here are some rules:

  • As stated, these couples cannot be married or in a relationship.
  • I will not include games from manga and animes with spin-off game titles (mainly because I’ll probably do a anime version of this list) and I will include comic book, graphic novels, etc., etc. (otherwise this list will never be complete).
  • I can only choose one ‘couple’ per franchise, i.e. if I choose Mario and Peach from the Super Mario series, I cannot choose Luigi and Daisy (spoilers, I didn’t choose either)

Alright, I think those are enough rules, let’s count it down!

#10 – Batman X Catwoman (various games)

003catwoman

For me, Batman and Catwoman are one of the golden comic book couples – their story is complicated yet not complicated at the same time. Their tales have been told in many different ways – sometimes they are in a relationship and even have children together; other times, they choose to abandon their love over their duties.

batman-catwoman

In the Arkham video games series, Catwoman appears often (even appearing as the antagonist in one of the games), however their relationship is touched upon, but never really explored. You can tell there is something between them – mainly evident in Arkham Knight when the Riddler kidnaps Catwoman so Batman has to solves puzzles in order to defuse a bomb planted on her. A relationship is also hinted between them in Injustice: Gods Among Us when Catwoman pleads with Batman to leave Gotham with her, but Batman being Batman, he declines so he can save the city once again, and they end up fighting eachother.

maxresdefault-26

In Telltale’s Batman game, Catwoman is included at the start and over the course of the 5 episodes, their relationship intensifies to the point where they spend a night together. But in the end, Catwoman flees Gotham out of fear, and Batman has to let her go.

maxresdefault-27

The reason why they’re #10 is because their origins are comic books and is predictable, but being such an iconic couple, I couldn’t not include them.

#9 – Reiji Arisu X Xiaomu (Namco X Capcom, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga series, Project X Zone series)

namcoxcapcom01

Who the hell are these people? No, what you should be asking is – who is this man and fox girl thing?

Reiji and Xiaomu first appeared in Namco X Capcom – a action RPG consisting of characters from various Namco and Capcom titles. It was Japan-only release game, so that’s probably why you’ve never heard of them or the game.

Reiji and Xiamou work for an organisation called Shinra, whose investigate disturbances in time and space, known as ‘fluxes’. 10 years prior to Namco X Capcom, Reiji’s father Shougo, was killed in a battle between Shinra and Ouma (another organisation). The game’s antagonist, Saya, is held responsible for the death of his father, which is why the two hold a grudge against her.

Namco X Capcom is a pretty long-winded game (it consists of 45 chapters) and through it, Reiji is given the role of being a ‘tight ass’ – all he cares about is duties and on the occasion, does show his caring side, especially towards Xiaomu. Xiaomu, however, is almost completely the opposite – she’s high spirited, comedic and often flirty towards Reiji. The two are a great team and seem to care deeply for one another. Hell, Reiji has a gun called ‘Gold’ while Xiaomu has a gun called ‘Silver’. Coincidence? I think not.

#8 – Solid Snake X Meryl Silverberg (Metal Gear Solid series)

meryl_under_control

Now, I haven’t played much of MSG but I know enough to dictate that Meryl was a definite love interest in Metal Gear Solid (it’s even stated on Wikipedia, so it must be true).

Meryl is a trained solider with a tomboyish attitude. She is very open with Snake – evening stating that during her childhood, she understood the world of guns more than the world of female puberty. He fate can also be decided by the player – if Snake endures being tortured by Revolver Ocelot, he will escape with her in the final segment of the game. If Snake does not, however, Meryl is later killed and Snake leaves her body to be buried in the ruins of Shadow Moses.

There are also some scenes the player can prompt during gameplay – for example, if Snake stares at Meryl during first-person mode, she begin to blush and ask embarrassing questions.

Meryl does return in later MGS games (despite her absence in MGS 2 to leave the previous game’s ending ambiguous) but is no longer seen as Snake’s love interest – in fact, she goes on to marry Johnny Sasaki/Akiba, the solider who imprisoned her in the first MGS game.

#7 – Delsin Rowe X Abigail ‘Fetch’ Walker (InFAMOUS: Second Son)

delsin_and_fetch_by_paul743-d7isogi

This is the first game I picked up in the InFAMOUS series, and also for my PS4. Second Son follows Delsin Rowe – a typical ‘bad boy’ teenager who suddenly gets super powers and decided to use them to fight against the prejudice of ‘Conduits’ (people who can absorb superpowers).

After discovering a series of murders of drug dealers, Delsin tracks down a girl called Fetch. After having a little fight and talking some sense into her, Delsin discovers that reason why she has been killing drug dealers is because of the death of her brother – the only person who accepted and protected her (this is explained more in InFAMOUS: First Light). Fetch eventually begins to trust Delsin, and there’s even a flirty conversation between the two before she helps him out on taking down some down guys.

#6 – Silver X Blaze (Sonic the Hedgehog series)

blaze_silver_by_evelynwn-d6ryb34.png

Not all of my ‘nearly couple’ can humans. Equally, I wanted to include LBGTQ characters too, but I couldn’t find any (boo).

Both Silver and Blaze first appear in Sonic ’06 (shudders) working together, despite how they met never being explained. Together, they try to stop Iblis and Sonic himself. Blaze is seen as the more calmer of the two – even to the point where she has to rescue Silver to ‘keep him out of trouble’.

Upon finally defeating Iblis, Silver tries to seal it within himself, but is rejected. Blaze, with her pyrokinesis skills, was accepted as vessell, and thus sacrificed herself. However, all events are erased, meaning that Silver and Blaze never actually crossed paths.

Due to Blaze’s powers, she often isolated herself due to other people’s fear, meaning she often spent time alone and found it hard to trust people. So, in order for her to even consider Silver a friend – despite how they met – means that they have some sort of special connection.

#5 – Warren Graham X Max Caulfield (Life is Strange)

319630_screenshots_2015-07-30_00099.jpg

Life is Strange is a beautiful indie game about friendship and consequences. You play as Max Caulfield – a shy and dorky teenage girl who discovers the power to turn back time. Warren is one of Max’s closest friends and a typical ‘science geek’. He is introduced almost at the beginning of episode 1, in which Max has to return the flash drive Warren gave her which contains films. Once Max gets it back from one of her classmates Dana, it is hinted that Warren has strong feelings towards Max, but she does not feel the same way.

Throughout the episodes, there are little ‘moments’ between the two – Max can help Warren with a science experiment to help his grade advance later in the week. At the end of episode 2, Max is seen with Warren watching an eclipse after going through the day’s events, ending with Warren moving closer to her so she is no longer cold.

Warren also takes a few beatings for Max through the game, mainly by one of the game’s antagonists, Nathan Prescott. Many characters seem aware of Warren’s feelings for her, despite Max being oblivious or just plain ignoring it. You can also make a choice to go on a date with Warren for a movie marathon in episode 2 and towards the end of the final episode, she can choose to hug, kiss or leave Warren before jumping back in time.

How Max’s and Warren’s relationship develops after the game ends is down to the player’s final choice in episode 5. If the player decided to sacrifice Chloe for Arcadia Bay, all of their developments through the episodes are erased due to Max rewriting history. But if the player does not sacrifice Chloe, a body is seen covered in a blanket by the Two Whale Diner next to a car that looks similar to Warren’s, indicating that he was killed during the storm.

#4 – Alex Weiss X Lara Croft (Tomb Raider (2013))

lara_says_goodbye_to_alex

Similar to Max and Warren, it is heavily hinted throughout Tomb Raider that Alex has feelings towards Lara, but she does not return them. Alex often defends her when Reyes turns on her or tries to cheer her up when she feels helpless.

Alex is the last member of the Endurance to die (apart from Whitman, but I don’t count him for obvious reasons), and is certainly the saddest death for me. The crew discover the PT boat that needs to be repaired in order to escape Yamati. Alex volunteers to sneak back aboard the now broken-down Endurance, hoping he may get the chance to impress Lara when he returns. Despite this, Lara goes to search for him after he doesn’t return, only to find out that he is stuck and cannot escape. Despite being injured, Alex found the tools but has a gas container pinned on his leg, ultimately breaking it. Lara tries to free him, however with the impending Solarii and the ship on the verge of destruction, she has no choice but to leave him.

A journal can later be found written by Alex, expressing his feelings for Lara. She takes his death hard, and vows that she will may sure no-one else dies.

#3 – Cloud Strife X Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII)

cloud-and-tifa-in-secror-5-church

I’m sorry, but I am a true supporter of Zach and Aeris being a couple.

The Final Fantasy universe has created a large amount of true love stories, but with Cloud being my favourite Final Fantasy character, I had to choose this couple over everyone else.

While Cloud and Tifa’s relationship is not hugely displayed in Final Fantasy VII (due to player’s choice as well), it is probably more evident in the movie Advent Children. I mean, they’re living together with 2 kids no less!

Tifa is a date option in the Golden Saucer segment of the game. It is also revealed that Cloud and Tifa were next door neighbours in Nibelheim before it was destroyed. When Tifa’s mother dies when she is 8, Cloud protects Tifa while climbing Mt. Nibel (despite her mother dying, Tifa thought her mother was there, so she went to go find her) but ended up being injured and their relationship somewhat impacted. However, before Cloud joins SOILDER, he sees Tifa one last time at the clock tower (a frequent date spot, apparently) and vows to protect her should she ever get a in trouble.

#2 – Eddy Gordo X Christie Monteiro (Tekken 4 – onwards)

45_christie_i_eddy

Despite Tekken being a fighting game, it definitely explores personal relationships – the whole Mishima family are a good example.

Eddy was first introduced in Tekken 3 after being released from prison for a crime he did not commit – the murder of his parents (Kazuya Mishima was the one who actually killed them) and enters the tournament to extract his revenge (even though Kazuya did not appear in this game).

Christie is introduced into the following game as Eddy’s pupil. Eddy’s master is her grandfather and they were both in prison together. Eddy was release before his master, and so he made a vow to teach his granddaughter Capoeria. The two became close – so close that all 3 of Christie’s storylines revolve around Eddy and finding him while he broods on his first world problems.

In Street Fighter X Tekken, Christie pairs up with Detective Lei Wulong to search for Eddy, who she believes is after the Pandora Box. Lei warns her that it is a small chance he is involved, to which she replies, “Even if there’s the smallest chance, I’ll go! I have so much to say to him..,” She later witnesses his ‘death’ and is taken over by the power of Pandora.

Needless to say, Christie shows a much later interest in Eddy (this is especially evident in both their endings for Tekken Tag Tournament 2) but due to Eddy’s ambitious nature, he leaves her behind.

#1 – Link X Zelda (The Legend of Zelda series)

zelda-skyward-sword-romance-screenshot__large

Link and Zelda’s relationship is easily one of the most frustrating romance pairings I have had to deal with. Link is – majority of the time – rescuing Zelda from Ganondorf and other evil doers; Zelda aids Link like a complete badass; it’s obvious they love eachother BUT THEY HAVEN’T EVEN KISSED YET!

Skyward Sword is probably the most we’ve gotten out of their relationship. It is placed as the first Zelda game and probably the strongest of their relationship – not just because of those scenes where it looks like Zelda is about to kiss Link but actually pushes him off Skyloft; or because Zelda’s father mentions how Zelda is slightly jealous of Link’s relationship with his Loftwing (yeah, she really gets jealous over a huge bird) or because of the way Zelda defends Link from Groose’s bullying ways – it’s because everything Link does in Skyward Sword is for Zelda. Yes, he rescues her in Ocanria of Time, but in Skyward Sword, Link allows Zelda to stay under the care of Impa – despite his mission being returning her to Skyloft. Skyward Sword certainly explores Link’s and Zelda’s relationship more than any other Zelda game, but then again, Breath of the Wild looks promising.

Which is My Favourite Link Incarnation from The Legend of Zelda Series?

To me, Link is one of many ultimate heroes in video games – he rises to challenges with courage; he has the ability to play musical instruments; his sword skills are impressive and he always possesses an unbreakable spirit. But with the Zelda games, you don’t play as just one Link – you play as many that are different and yet not so different each time. Let’s take a look at the four incarnations of Link and see which one is my favourite.

Unified Timeline

Games: Skyward Sword, The Minish Cap, Four Swords, Ocarina of Time

Link_SS_4TMC_Link_04Linkfs

This timeline contains the earliest incarnation Link with Skyward Sword being the first possible incarnation of Link. To me, this is possible the saddest timeline for Link – in Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time, he loses his two best friends (Zelda and Saria, respectfully). Both of these games prioritise friendship, such as Link and Saria’s relationship of having a best friend from childhood that you eventually lose. And while Link deals with a lot of hardship in these games (besides losing his best friend, he also gets split into four and has to endure a talking bird-like hat on his head), he still manages to learn a lot of things. And as a player, I did too.

Fallen Hero Timeline

Games: A Link to the Past, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, Link’s Awakening, A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes, The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link

LinkalttprOoS_LinkOoA_LinkLink_LA

ALBW_LinkTFH_Link_GreenLoZ_Link_ShieldAoL_Link

In this alternative timeline, Link was defeated by Ganondorf in the final battle, hence the title. Despite this, I believe Link to still be a true hero, despite his previous efforts. This timeline seems to be have a recurring theme of Link righting a lot of mistakes – in A Link to the Past, Link is able to restore the Dark World and Hyrule to their natural states before Ganon intervened through the power of the Triforce, as he does similarly in Oracle of Seasons  and A Link between Worlds.  Another recurring theme also seems to be collecting items, but then again, isn’t that every Zelda game?

To me, this timeline shows that despite the despair Link often faces and sometimes even encounters, he can still try his best to defeat it and succeeds. Also, I like the fact that there is an alternative timeline – many games, books, TV shows, etc., etc. share a similar storyline of bad guy wrecking everything so good guy stops him and is successful in doing so – but with this timeline, it has shown that sometimes even the best heroes can be defeated.

Child Timeline

Games: Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess, Four Sword Adventures

MM_Link_2TP_Link_03FSA_Link

This timeline follows Link after he has been sent back in time after successfully defeating Ganon in the Adult timeline (which is the next timeline).

The recurring theme in this timeline seems to be light overcoming darkness – in Twilight Princess and Four Sword Adventures, this is much more prominent, earning Link the ingame and fan nickname “Hero of Light”. Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess are filled with despair and bizarre environments in which darkness thrives in. There are some disheartening moments, but naturally they are overcome. This is also the only timeline where Link is seen as an incarnation in a different game – in Twilight Princess, the second Link incarnation is taught from the previous Link incarnation – the Hero’s Spirit.

To me, this is most interesting and emotional rollercoaster of the timelines. There were many moments when I felt the end goal was not achievable, but I managed to come through in the end. It may contain some of the more darker Legend of Zelda games, but they are most definitely the most intense.

Adult Timeline

Games: The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks

WW_Link_3PH_Link_CielaLoZ_ST_Link

Despite Link’s childlike appearance in these games, this does not stop Link from being a true hero. I feel that these games are more aesthetically pleasing with the art style and fun to play because of the almost care-free vibe they give off (despite having to save people and the world) and some of the humour used. These are the games I play with not as much serious as I would play when I play any Legend of Zelda games, for example, Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess. In these games, I can explore my surroundings without feeling like the main storyline is my top priority. And this incarnation is by far the cutest.

Another timeline?

Games: Hyrule Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Legends

HW_Link

OK, so I wasn’t being completely honest with you. Yes, there are four official incarnations of Link, but I’d like to think the Link in the Hyrule Warriors series is another incarnation, despite it not being an official Nintendo franchise. I mean, it follows a similar storyline to previous games and includes previous characters, so it should pass as a Zelda game. While it is a more strategic/hack and slash game compared to a story-driven series, I still feel like this could be a separate incarnation of Link. Besides, his outfit is by far my favourite.

So, which is my favourite incarnation of Link? Well, it has to be the Link from the Child Timeline. I have always thought of Nintendo games as happy and focused on sharing gaming experiences with others – even in single player games – but for Nintendo it almost turn it on its head with Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess make these games stand out for me. While I did feel more emotionally invested with Link in Skyword Sword and Ocarina of Time, I was still emotionally invested in the Child Timeline Link, just in a different way. And Majora’s Mask will always be my favourite Legend of Zelda game.

There you have it – Zelda Month has finished here on my blog. I’ve enjoyed it a lot and it’s certainly enflamed my love for these games again. Thank-you for reading and I hope you enjoyed Zelda Month too. I’ll be back next week with normal entries. Take care until then.

My Top 10 Favourite Outfits from The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

Zelda-Tri-Force-Adventure

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes is the most recently released Zelda game. It’s a silly and off-the-cuff kind of game, but the online multiplayer is what makes it.

The story behind the game is that a princess named Princess Styla of the high-fashion Kingdom of Hytopia has been cursed by Lady Maud – a Drablands witch – due to jealousy, so it is up up to the three heroes to free her from it (it’s not a major curse – she has to wear a ugly jumpsuit for the rest of her life).

So of course, in a high-fashioned game, there are outfits the player can craft in Madam Couture’s shop with materials they have collected along the way. So far, there’s around 40 to collect (DLC is dropping again soon, so doubt there be more), so let’s take a look at my favourite 10. No worries for spoilers!

#10 – The Tri Suit

TFH_Link_Tri_Suit_Model

This outfit – if all three Links are wearing it – deal more damage, dodge more attacks and find hearts and rupees more frequently. To craft this item, you will need five Friendly Tokens and 300 rupees.

The outfit reminds me of a Power Ranger outfit, had it ever been created by the Japanese. I hope that if a new Power Rangers TV series happens, they had a blonde green one that only says, “Hyeeh Kyaah Hyaaah Haa Hyet!”. And there needs to be a robot wolf.

#9 – The Ninja Gi

TFH_Link_Ninja_Gi_Model

As you’d expect from a ninja outfit, Link can deal up to triple damage when dashing, but the material list is pretty long: Rainbow Coral, Ancient Fin, Vintage Linen, Gidbo Bandage (ew), Stal Skull and 1500 rupees.

But to make Link wear a Ninja outfit, I think it’s totally worth it. Shame you can’t climb rooftops or throw ninja stars.

#8 – The Queen of Hearts

TFH_Link_Queen_of_Hearts_Model

Much like the character from Alice in Wonderland, Link is dressed like royalty.  But what makes this outfit? Link is wearing a fricking dress. The Legendary Hero of Time is wearing a dress to lift a curse on a princess. He’s saved the world before, and now he’s trying to do it again while holding up his skirts. I feel his pain…sort of.

This outfit gives Link three extra heart containers, but much like the Ninja Gi, it’s a costly list: Mystery Jade, Fairy Dust, Star Fragment, Exquisite Lace and 1200 rupees. But it makes him look regal and that’s all that matters.

#7 – Fire Blazer

TFH_Link_Fire_Blazer_Model

Could Link look anymore fabulous? No, especially not with that eye ball that makes him look ready for a masked ball. But with the fire pattern on the outfit, it also makes him look cool. Badass hero ready for a masked ball kind of cool.

This outfit allows Link to shoot three fireballs at once with the Fire Gloves. It can be crafted from Mystery Extract, Twisted Twig, a Lava Drop and 1500 rupees.

#6 – The Energy Gear

TFH_Link_Energy_Gear_Model

Again, another super hero looking outfit, but I love the hair. It’s very Cloud Strife/Lars Alexandersson/Gouk-esque. No, just me then? But he have to agree that he does look pretty cool in this outfit…in a dorkly kind of way. And like it’s name, it increase’s Link’s energy by 50%.

The ingredient list for this one is a bit strange: Monster Guts, Demon Fossil, Kodongo Tail, a Keese Wing and 800 rupees.

 #5 – Fierce Deity Armor

TFH_Fierce_Deity_Armor_Model

Why does this look so familiar? Could it be that…this is something from another game? From another Zelda game? I know it sounds like I’m poking fun at Zelda and Nintendo, but I’m not – had they not made the Fierce Deity Armor that resembles the Fierce Deity Mask from Majoras Mask an outfit for this game, I would have been angry. But Link looks just as possessed and powerful as before. But in a good way…maybe?

The cost for this outfit is unknown at this time as it will be released as December DLC. But wearing it enables Link to shoot four sword beams diagonally. Look forward to it!

#4 – The Legendary Dress

TFH_Link_Legendary_Dress_Model

Wait, this is another familiar looking one? From another Zelda game? But wait…didn’t someone else wear it? That’s right – you can make Link cosplay as Zelda. Mind bending, right? But who wore it best?

Despite this, this is one of the least costly outfits in the game – all you need is one Tektite Shell, one Sweet Mushroom and 200 rupees. And hearts appear more frequently.

#3 – Lucky Loungewear

TFH_Link_Lucky_Loungewear_Model

I think there’s a recurring theme between Link and sleeping. But I don’t think we’ve ever seen him in pajamas before…until now. And he looks so cute – like a puffed up ball of snugginess.

Despite this, this outfit actually allows Link to dodge more attacks – I thought it would at least be a hindrance. At least it’s not much to craft: a Sweet Mushroom, a Blin Bling, Gohma’s Eye and 200 rupees.

Now Link needs to just talk in a cutesy, whisperly voice…oh, wait.

#2 – The Spin Attack Attire

TFH_Link_Spin_Attack_Attire_Model

In case you didn’t know, I am a huge fan of the history of Japan (mainly the 18th century when the Western influence will beginning to slowly take over), so I immediately took a liking to this one. How could I not like Link dressed up as a Japanese Samurai Warrior? That should be his new title.

Unsurprisingly, this outfit allows Link to execute the Big Spin Attack on enemies, however it is unaffective against  to Buzz Blobs. To make this outfit, you need a Crystal Skull, a Sanctuary Mask, a Steel Mask and 2000 rupees. Yikes.

#1 – Cheer Outfit

TFH_Link_Cheer_Outfit_Model

Yes, you read that right and saw the picture. It you thought the dresses (yes, there is more than one) in this game were hilarious, then you’ve seen nothing yet. Link in a cheerleader outfit. The keeper of the Triforce of Courage can wear a cheerleader outfit. Oh Hiromasa Shikata and Eiji Aonuma, I completely love you for this. I love the little details – even the ponytail. Link, you are one of a kind hero.

All you need fore this outfit is 3 Frilly Fabric and 100 rupees. And much like its name sake, it increases Links’ allies energy by 50%.

Nintendo, I love you just for making awesome games, but for having a great sense of humor while you do it. It makes these game so much more enjoyable.

My Top 5 Favourite Scenes from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

maxresdefault (8)

If you read my previous Zelda Month blog, then you’ll know that The Legend of Zelda: The Winder Waker HD was the first LoZ game I completed (not played), this meant a lot to me, and still does today. So, let’s take a look at my favourite scenes from the game – warning for spoilers if you haven’t played it (seriously, why haven’t you?)

#5 – When Tetra transforms into Zelda

028_thumb

Yeah Link, I would be pretty shocked too.

When I first watched this scene, I felt terribly confused, but only because I hadn’t played much Zelda in the past. But now – obviously – I understand it much better.

In this scene, Link and Tetra – leader of the pirates and Link’s companion – follow the voice that had been coming from Tetra’s necklace, only to be lead to a chamber sealed underneath The Great Sea. Upon discovering that the boat Link has been travelling in – The King of Red Lions – is actually the King of Hyrule – Daphenes Nohanson Hyrule –  it is revealed that Tetra is actual Princess Zelda, the Protector of The Triforce of Wisdom.

The reason why I love this scene is because even though Zelda blames herself for everything Link and his sister Aryll have had to go through up to this point, Link says nothings – he simply laughs and runs away to carry on the adventure, but manages to reassure her completely. Just a simple gesture meant to me that they have a connection – something that is a recurring theme in the Zelda games.

  • Watch the scene here.

 #4 – Awakening the Sages

the_sages__wind_waker__by_oldhat104-d539j3n

Zelda games make incarnations cool.

This part of the game is extremely long, but I love the different parts you have to complete in order to move on – like pieces of a puzzle all neatly fitting in together.

At this point in the game, Link must resurrect the Master Sword with its lost power. In order to do so, he must unlock the Earth and Wind Temples. After gaining the Power Bracelets and Iron Boots from the Fire and Ice Islands (respectfully), Link is able to destroy the stones blocking the Wind Temple and the Earth Temple. Following the musical instructions inside the temples with the Wind Waker, Link awakens the spirits Fado of the Kokiri Tribe and Laruoto of the Zora Tribe, the previous Sages. After hearing their stories, you can’t help but feel a bit sad – they died because they held something beyond their control and they still reside there until their reincarnations are awakened.

The other reason I love this scene and sequence in the game is because it involves two of my favourite characters from the game – Medli of the Ruto Tribe and Makar of the Kotoks. I love the puzzles that follow, even though they are extensive and involve a lot of character switching. But who can’t get enough of hearing that little wooden jingle everytime Makar walks? Medli deserves equal love too.

  • Watch the Fado scene here.
  • Watch the Laruoto scene here.

#3 – Link is reunited with Aryll

Captured_Hylian_Girls

Aryll’s the one in the middle, incase you hadn’t guessed.

The game first started with Link wanting to rescue his sister from the Helmaroc King (AKA that giant bird at the beginning), which then leads onto Link wanting to stop Ganon. So, thanks for getting kidnapped Aryll, I guess?

At first Link cannot rescue Aryll by himself – he has to collect some gear, etc., etc. before taking on Forsaken Fortress for a second time with Tetra’s help. While only taking half as long as it did to reach the top then get rejected once you reached the to the first time around, Link manages to defeat Phantom Ganon and fight his way to find Aryll (and tow other girls, but we’re concentrating on Aryll). The reunion is cut short because Link as to take care of the Helmaroc King, it’s still heartwarming nonetheless. And, even though Link did rescue her and sent her back with the pirates, I knew this adventure was only part of the way through.

You do receive a letter from Aryll, saying that she is working hard upon Tetra’s ship and even sends you some rupees to help out. But you don’t see her again until the every end of the game, where the pirate ship greets them after defeating Ganon once and for all, like a fairytale ending.

  • Watch the rescuing scene here (5:17 – 8:01).
  • Watch the final scene here (skip to 3:48).

#2 – The Weird Fairy

125px-Fairy_Queen_The_Wind_Waker_HD

Totally doesn’t belong in a horror movie.

Going back towards the beginning of the game, Link has to find a way to step onto the Ice Ring Isle and Fire Mountain in order to enter the Temples, restore power to the Master Sword, get the Triforce Pieces, etc., etc. But he has to find a way so he doesn’t freeze to death or burn alive (trust me, the death animations are pretty gruesome for such an artistic game), and to do so, he must gain the power of the fire and ice arrows. After gaining the power of fast travel through the Wind Waker, you can freely travel to Mother and Child Isles, where the Fairy Queen is located.

Needlessly to say, she’s a bit…strange. Even though she appears as a child, she is far from it. Combined with the creepy music (I love it though, don’t get me wrong), her mannerisms and the fact that she appears to have a crush on Link (they’ve meet for all of five seconds. Seriously), she’s definitely the weirdest character for me in Wind Waker. But it wouldn’t be a Zelda game without a weird character here and there, would it?

  • Watch the scene here.

#1 – Sleepy Link

tumblr_inline_mhazuyQvYH1qz4rgp

This should be a meme.

How could I not put this as my favourite scene?

This scene comes from the opening, after the prologue about the Hero of Time (one of my favourite prologues ever). We are introduced to Outset Island and Link’s sister, Aryll. It starts with her trying to find him, only to discover he’s been asleep on Aryll’s Lookout (why he was up there, I still don’t know to this day). She tries to hint that it’s his tenth birthday (how do you forget that) but he’s still half-asleep. But it’s Link’s face that get’s me – it’s a literal ‘I give no fucks’ face, despite it being one of the happiest days of his life. I laugh at it every time, despite it’s cuteness.

Oh Toon Link, how I wish you were real.
